Lessons From 2 Cities Over 4 Years

I moved from Utah to Washington, DC in March 2012 (see DC to the Fullest blog) and from DC to NYC in March 2014. Here are some of the things I learned in 4 years in these East Coast cities -

How to:
  • Live life fully - celebrate everyday, make the most of weekdays and don't just wait for the weekends
  • Accept diverse people and ideas simultaneously while holding true to my own
  • Accept that not everyone is going to like me and invest in the people who do
  • Forgive myself for being imperfect
  • Find joy in the process of discovery
  • Pay for experiences that create wonderful memories
  • Talk about my religion without feeling the pressure to convert everyone
  • Build my hobbies and talents in a new direction to continue growing
  • Withhold judgment and love people
  • Appreciate the advantages of singlehood
  • Be happy for people's achievements instead of being jealous or resentful
  • Look for humor and kindness in everyday life
Learned that:
  • Maintaining friendships is hard and only works if it's mutual
  • Two great people could be incompatible
  • Most of life is gray, not black or white
  • On the job
    • Speed without accuracy is very unprofessional.
    • Confidentiality is super important, especially regarding HR things.
    • Don't judge/comment on an office's culture and policies when you first get there; sit back, observe, and learn first before making recommendations.
    • Always follow-up when given a task/assignment.
Reaffirmed:
  • When things get tough, prioritize God
    • As long as I pay my tithing, I'll be ok
    • When I make time for the temple and scripture study, the other important stuff will get done
  • God will magnify my efforts/skills to fulfill my calling
  • God has a sense of humor
Gained:
  • My temple endowment
  • 1 master's degree, and 2 partial ones
  • Job experience at 2 universities
  • Lots of dating relationship experiences

At Rockefeller Center on my exact 2 year mark. Reflecting back, I'm grateful for all the blessings, miracles, people, lessons, and adventures that have allowed me to live life to the fullest. I love that it coincides with spring, Easter, and General Conference because it reminds me that the gospel of Jesus Christ offers eternal hope and renewal. However longer I'll be in this great city, I aim to live it fully.
