I have been in the work force for 11 years, since my senior year in high school. It took me years to figure out what I "want to do when I grow up" and I changed my mind many times (see "Journey of 15 Career Options"). Next week, I'm finally starting my Dream Job as a Career Counselor at a university. It's humbling to look back at all the jobs - the stepping stones - it took to get me here.
Some were way more enjoyable than others. My pay and duration at each job varied widely. But they are all a part of my journey, a huge ongoing experience.
Positions I've held, in chronological order:
- Customer Service Associate
- Restaurant Hostess
- Deli Clerk
- Customer Service Representative
- Receptionist
- Mail Room Clerk
- Office Assistant
- Medical Records Assistant
- Secretary
- Camp Counselor
- Teaching Assistant
- Membership Retention Specialist
- Personal Assistant
- Receptionist
- Instructional Assistant
- Executive Assistant to the President
- Help Desk Coordinator
- Executive Assistant to the Associate Dean for Health Affairs
- Administrative Aide
- Graduate Student Services Intern
- Administrative Assistant
- Academic Secretary
- CAREER COUNSELOR
Moral of the story: Don't give up! Keep working towards your dream even if you have detours, delays, and disappointments. It will be worth it.
