The # of Jobs It Took To Get To My Dream Job

I have been in the work force for 11 years, since my senior year in high school. It took me years to figure out what I "want to do when I grow up" and I changed my mind many times (see "Journey of 15 Career Options"). Next week, I'm finally starting my Dream Job as a Career Counselor at a university. It's humbling to look back at all the jobs - the stepping stones - it took to get me here.

Some were way more enjoyable than others. My pay and duration at each job varied widely. But they are all a part of my journey, a huge ongoing experience.

Positions I've held, in chronological order:
  1. Customer Service Associate
  2. Restaurant Hostess
  3. Deli Clerk
  4. Customer Service Representative
  5. Receptionist
  6. Mail Room Clerk
  7. Office Assistant
  8. Medical Records Assistant
  9. Secretary
  10. Camp Counselor
  11. Teaching Assistant
  12. Membership Retention Specialist
  13. Personal Assistant
  14. Receptionist
  15. Instructional Assistant
  16. Executive Assistant to the President
  17. Help Desk Coordinator
  18. Executive Assistant to the Associate Dean for Health Affairs
  19. Administrative Aide
  20. Graduate Student Services Intern
  21. Administrative Assistant
  22. Academic Secretary
  23. CAREER COUNSELOR
Moral of the story: Don't give up! Keep working towards your dream even if you have detours, delays, and disappointments. It will be worth it.
